Recording information: Orange Music, NJ (1997). Laswell, myth man of the bass and the consummate journeyman musician, returns to Belgium's idiosyncratic Sub Rosa label for the next installment in his OSCILLATIONS series. Part two consists of four lengthy drum-and-bass workouts, each exploring the dark side of jungle known to its inner circle as techstep. As this is techstep done the Laswell way, you get not only his skyscraping basslines but also twisted layers of darkened studio distortion and fuzz ("Virus"), Africanized drone meeting deep-space invasion ("Autopia"), and a haunting electronic paean to William Burroughs ("El Hombre Invisible"). There's no doubt that regular collaborator Eraldo Bernocchi has had some effect on Laswell-witness the dour soundscapes of "Red Night." Laswell's certainly no slouch in the composition department. The man who brought us years of searing bass oscillation effectively drills that point home on this apocalyptic sequel.
