Originally recorded as a reaction to the schizophrenic music of BYRDMANIAX, the warm and rustic FARTHER ALONG, which features a reunion of the original Byrds, unintentionally turned out to be the Byrds' final record--a resulting tour was aborted and a follow-up record failed. Recorded during a smooth four-day stint in July 1971, FARTHER ALONG was the only album produced entirely by the Byrds. Clarence White's contributions stand out most prominently. Highlights include the instrumental bluegrass breakdown "Bristol Steam Convention Blues" (co-written with Byrds drummer/Nashville West alumnus Gene Parsons) and the pair of songs that eerily seem to presage White's death. White's hymnal reading of the title track was sung by Burrito Brothers Gram Parsons and Bernie Leadon at the guitarist's 1973 funeral (he was killed by a drunk driver), while the twangy and poignant "Bugler" ended with the title character getting killed in a car accident. Founding member Roger McGuinn also left his mark with "Tiffany Queen," a chiming rocker that could easily fit onto a Tom Petty album and the wistful "Antique Sandy." The bonus tracks provide the bridge from this lost classic to McGuinn's solo career.
