Because they were contractually bound to release two albums a year, the Byrds trudged into the studio for three weeks in January 1971 straight off a tour supporting 1970's UNTITLED. Originally derided by critics and fans alike due to Terry Melcher's liberal use of strings and brass, BYRDMANIAX is a mish-mash of musical styles that makes for a fascinating listening experience.
New material includes an interesting mix of originals and covers. Highlights include an inspirational reading of the Art Reynolds Singers gospel classic "Glory, Glory" and a pair of Clarence White-driven songs, the traditional bluegrass number "My Destiny" and a poignant version of "Jamaica Say You Will," written by a then-unknown Jackson Browne. White also shines on the quick-picking instrumental "Green Apple Quick Step," featuring father Eric on harmonica and Byron Berline on fiddle. Elsewhere, Roger McGuinn contributes the gorgeous ballads "Pale Blue" and "I Trust," along with a pair of numbers taken from his failed theatrical remake of PEER GYNT, the jaded "I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician" and the wistful "Kathleen's Song." A standout bonus tracks is a White resurrection of former Byrd Gene Clark's "Think I'm Gonna Feel Better."
