A standard in jazz is beyond a fixture or staple--it is a pillar, a touchstone, terra firma. The versions presented in this collection are part of the reason why these titles endure in the great American songbook. Throughout her quarter-century of recording, Billie Holiday's voice changed considerably. This collection features her small-band work from the late '30s and early '40s, which many consider to be her best period, as well as two fully orchestrated tracks from 1958, the year before Lady Day died. Highlights include her incredible melodic reinterpretation of Cole Porter's "Night and Day," and a version of "Body and Soul." Holiday is given tasteful support from the likes of Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton, Lester Young, steady Freddie Green, and swinging Cozy Cole.
