The contribution to American music made by the towering figure affectionately known as "Satchmo" is truly incalculable. Like an early contemporary of his, Babe Ruth, who excelled in baseball as both pitcher and slugger (not to mention the fact that he was as big and colorful a personality as Armstrong), Satchmo defined jazz soloing and was the ur-interpretive vocalist--which is to say that instrumentalists and singers alike learned about their craft from him.
While all of these tracks, which span 34 years of his career, feature vocals, his cornet or trumpet is always handy for an extended introduction, blazing solo, or "see-you-later" coda. Listen to Louis comp vocally behind himself in between the lines of "I Surrender Dear"--it's a truly sensual experience. Or how about his shuckin' and jivin' with Trummy Young, his longtime trombone sidekick, on "Rockin' Chair?" As with all his playing, Satch's scat singing (which is only occasionally featured here), is never about pyrotechnics--his smoothly rendered vocal embellishments are always a melodic and rhythmic wonder to behold.
