Magical Magical

Magical Magical is the second full-length album by German ambient artist Cass. following a series of cassettes and a split 7" single with Altars Altars. His sound combines gentle electronic loops with soft pianos, horns, strings, and guitars, as well as occasional field recordings and vocals. A few songs feature guest vocals, notably "Lantern," which is far more poppy, and even soulful, than would be expected from a shadowy ambient artist. The album is at its best when it allows the compositions to stretch out and develop gracefully, particularly on the stunning highlight "Atlon," where horn and string loops form impressive patterns at an easygoing pace. "Love Lockdown" follows a similar path, starting with twinkling tones and eventually building up to gorgeous string loops. Altars Altars joins Cass. on the gracious, melancholy album-closer "Let's Keep Us Close Until We Die," providing a teary farewell. Magical Magical is an impressive album which will feel right at home to anyone familiar with Kompakt's Pop Ambient compilations, as well as ambient indie-electronic artists such as the Boats. ~ Paul Simpson|
