While it isn't the best place to start a Billie Holiday collection, WISHING ON THE MOON covers a lot of ground on one CD. Neither a best-of nor a rarities collection, the disc includes material both infamous and off the beaten path, drawing on recordings made between her earliest sessions and the height of her fame some 10 years later, before she started on her tragic decline. Many of her early recordings often found her squeezing all the juice she could out of dry lemons, as shown on "Twenty-Four Hours a Day." But when she hit her stride, Billie could put a bite on even the lamest lyric, evidenced here by such cuts as "I've got My Love to Keep Me Warm." It's a different story when the songs suit her talents: listen to the melancholic swing of "All of Me" or "Lover Come Back to Me"--the tension between the band's bouncing accompaniment and Billie's laid-back phrasing is almost unbearable.
