Personnel includes: Nat "King" Cole (vocals, piano); Oscar Moore (guitar); Johnny Miller (bass).
Recorded between 1941 & 1946.
For Sentimental Reasons contains 25 early sides from Nat King Cole and his trio recorded between 1941 and 1946, a couple of which were originally released by Decca Records, but most of what is presented here came from Cole's longtime label, Capitol Records. Bassist Wesley Prince appears on a couple of the sides (the Decca ones, actually), but the balance feature Johnny Miller on bass, the marvelous Oscar Moore on guitar, and Cole himself on piano and vocals (the final track, a delightfully spry version of Mel Torme's classic "The Christmas Song," includes a string section). Cole, for those unfamiliar with his strong jazz base, was a wonderful piano player and his trio was a versatile, vibrant, and lively ensemble. Check out their take on Harold Arlen's "It's Only a Paper Moon" or their breezy rendition of "Route 66." Actually, it hardly matters what track you zero in on -- they all have a joyous energy (even the ballads) and a priceless and uncommon clarity. ~ Steve Leggett
