This CD features the recordings Bowlly made when he returned to England after his tenure with the Ray Noble Band in the U.S. PROUD OF YOU consists entirely of tracks recorded in the 1934-38 heyday of Al Bowlly's tragically abbreviated career. This compilation is an excellent overview of Bowlly's tenure with the Roy Fox Orchestra, which Lew Stone took over when Fox returned to America in the mid-1930s. Under Stone's leadership, the orchestra turned into one of Britain's greatest dance bands. This 20-track collection shows off all of Bowlly's skills, but focuses on his much-vaunted skills as a ballad singer. Although it's not likely that Sinatra heard Bowlly before his 1941 death, there's an occasional similarity to their phrasing on tracks like the classic title song and the medley "Al Bowlly Remembers." While the material is often sentimental and occasionally sappy to modern ears, Al Bowlly was a brilliant singer, and this collection is essential to any student of big-band jazz vocalists.
