複雑なリズムや体系的なロジックをみごとに解析
シェーンベルクよりも早く、1919年に独自の12音技法を発明していたオーストリアの作曲家、音楽理論家ヨーゼフ・マティアス・ハウアー(1883-1959)の作品集です。彼が追及した12音技法は、他とは全く異なるものであり、シェーンベルクとは激しく対立したのでした。彼の作風は時代を追うごとに変化し、色彩に基づくものあり、図形楽譜あり、時には易学に基づくものまであったと言われています。また1936年には頽廃音楽の烙印を押され、存在すらも忘れられてしまいました。そんな彼の作品から「メロディと前奏曲」を、鬼才ピアニスト、シュライエルマッハーが丹念に演奏しています。これらの作品は、基本的に鍵盤楽器なら何を演奏してもよく(通常は、ピアノ、ハルモニウム、チェレスタ)、ここではスタインウェイのピアノを使用し、挑発的かつ瞑想的な雰囲気を醸し出しています。とりわけ1919年の「ゾンネンメロス」は、この曲集を象徴する作品で、複雑なリズムや体系的なロジックは、ハウアーが到達した世界を的確に表現しています。シュライエルマッハーはハウアーの作品をこれまでにもMDGレーベルからリリースしており、当盤が4枚目のリリースとなります。
