The career of the New Orleans singer Eldridge Holmes, one of the great forgotten talents of 1960s Southern soul, is highlighted on this best-of, which follows his development, overseen by producer Allen Toussaint, throughout the 1960s and early '70s. Tracks like the impassioned "Love Problem," a mid-'60s recording of "If I Were a Carpenter" using the Four Tops' arrangement, and 1969's impeccably funky "The Book" show a master vocalist at work, and as a bonus he's backed by the legendary Meters on the deep blues of "Cheatin' Woman."
