This affectionate 1990 look back at the singer's origins is hardly an exercise in nostalgia even if he does reprise his very first hit, "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams." For one thing, there are three lush originals, "When Do The Bells Ring For Me," "Where Do You Go From Love," and "I've Come Home Again," all written for the occasion by songwriter Charles DeForest, as well as "Antonia," a non-cloying song about Bennett's daughter, contributed by Bob Wells and Jack Segal. There are also classics like the Gershwins' "The Girl I Love" (modeled on pianist Erroll Garner's classic tempo-shifting version), Kurt Weill's "Speak Low," Jerome Kern's "The Folks That Live On The Hill, " and, of course, the ageless "Body And Soul." As he did on THE ART OF EXCELLENCE, arranger Jorge Calandrelli contributes appropriately lavish settings which showcase both Bennett and long-time accompanist Ralph Sharon with a minimun of fuss.
