San Diego-based emo prog instrumental quartet Chon followed their 2014 EP Woohoo! with the expanded production values and compositional intricacy of debut full-length Grow. The band toured ceaselessly throughout its early days, supporting post-hardcore acts such as After the Burial, Animals as Leaders, and others. Entering the studio in late 2014, the band laid down perfect articulations of its guitar-heavy, often staggeringly technical tunes, most of which were instrumental and existed in some middle ground between emo's yearning tones and the intricate compositional detail of math rock. First single "Story" was followed up by "Can't Wait," one of their few tunes with vocals, shortly before the release of the album. More touring was scheduled to ensue in support of Grow in the spring of 2015. ~ Fred Thomas
