In the tradition of vocalists like Ella and Sinatra, who devoted entire albums to the work of great American songwriters, Bennett presents this tribute to the work of the man whose songs virtually defined the term "standard;" Irving Berlin. Certainly, Bennett had never shied away from tackling Berlin's voluminous catalog previous to this recording, but this was the first time he focused his formidable talents exclusively on the great master. Always an artist of both power and taste, Bennett had gained extra shadings of subtlety and intimacy in his voice by the 1980's, and he puts them to good use here. On "All of My Life" and the evergreen "White Christmas," the breathy, lyrical tenor sax of guest Dexter Gordon weaves itself in and around Bennett's voice, and the two sound like graceful dancing partners. Dizzy Gillespie and George Benson also lend their talents to a couple of tunes here. While these illustrious collaborators' contributions are beyond reproach, Bennett needs no assistance to grab the listener's attention. Though an undue amount of reverb is added to his voice here, he remains one of the most direct, communicative vocalists in popular music, and with bulletproof material like this to work with, Bennett has a field day.
