Grover Washington, Jr. has always straddled the boundaries between R&B, pop and jazz. Throughout his nearly thirty year career, he employed a wide variety of jazz musicians but always cast them in musical settings that differed from their usual stomping grounds. 1987's STRAWBERRY MOON is no exception to this. Among others, jazzers Joey DeFrancesco, Tyrone Brown (known for his work with Max Roach) and Marcus Miller appear on this release. The focus, however, is on Washington's saxophone playing, and even on the vocal tracks, he soliloquizes over the music with his characteristic sultry and velvety tone. Highlights on STRAWBERRY MOON include the romantic "The Look of Love" featuring vocalist Jean Carne and "Caught A Touch Of Your Love" which includes a soulful vocal from blues legend B.B. King. Funky and danceable, these songs celebrate love and romantic bliss. It's easy to see why "quiet storm" DJ's regularly feature Washington's music in their radio programs.
