Godfathers of punk blues and one of the most consistently powerful live acts of the '90s, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion return to down-and-dirty form with their 11th studio album, Freedom Tower: No Wave Dance Party 2015. Inspired by the town they've long called their home, JSBX have described Freedom Tower as "more than a high-octane dance party record, it is a document of New York City, a chronicle of grit and terror and love!" And Spencer, Judah Bauer, and Russell Simins certainly walk it like they talk it on this LP -- they recorded the album at the Daptone House of Soul in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and mixed the set with fabled punk and hip-hop producer Alap Momin, giving it a sound that reflects the gritty heart of the city just as much as the lyrics. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have been wailing hard and wild for more than two decades, and Freedom Tower shows they still have enough juice to last enough 20 years if they play their cards right. ~ Mark Deming|
