Such: John Tilbury (piano); Eddie Prevost (percussion); Yoshikazu Iwamoto (shakuhachi). The trio comprising Such is two thirds of AMM (Eddie Prevost and John Tilbury) plus shakuhachi player Yoshikazu Iwamoto. The Issue at Hand is a single, continuous improvisation lasting 151 minutes (track separation provided for convenience only) and it is extraordinarily beautiful. Imagine a sublime, spare AMM performance with a shakuhachi replacing Rowe's guitar and you get a fairly decent picture of what transpires here. Making choices in a calm and unhurried manner is much of what makes up this performance. Iwamoto's presence necessarily imparts a Japanese sense of space, and his companions accent that aspect wonderfully, not by shallowly adding this or that Japanese effect but by being true to their own visions, which have always shared something with the Zen aesthetic. The placement of sounds in silence has much akin to Japanese sumi painting or rock garden creation. Given no reason to indulge in the occasional loud, jazzy drumming explosions that punctuate his work with AMM, Prevost in particular generates an astonishing variety of percussive and stroked embellishments, always adding just the right counterweight to his fellow musicians. Tilbury, as is his forte, is all about the spare but luxuriant note, offered rarely but at the absolutely perfect moment; his solo section at the end of "Para' 7" might have had Gavin Bryars dropping his jaw in amazement and envy. Together, the three create one of the most gorgeous and, in many respects, unusual albums of free improvisation to be released in the '90s. Fans of AMM will love this recording, as will anyone interested in the use of the shakuhachi in an improvised setting. ~ Brian Olewnick
