Genesis still have a credibility problem which at present just trails the present standing of ex-drummer/vocalist Philip Collins. Duke was the record that shed their 'heavy prog' image and found them beginning to loosen up. Collins had grown in confidence following Peter Gabriel's departure and the band immediately became much tighter musically. In addition to the hit singles "Duchess," the buoyant "Turn It On Again" and realism of a situation in "Misunderstanding," there is the painful honesty of "Please Don't Ask." There have been many bigger Genesis albums, but none have anywhere near as much heart.

1967年に英国で産声を上げ、70年代には叙情的でありながらシアトリカルなプログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドとして非常に高い人気を誇り、その後80年代にはポップスの要素を大きく打ち出しながら世界的な人気を誇るバンドとして音楽シーンの頂点へと昇り詰めていった、英国ロック・バンドの代表格であり、五大プログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドの一つとしても賞賛を受ける存在、それがこのジェネシスだ。

英国プログレッシヴ・ロック黄金期の一翼を担うバンドとしてプログ・ロック・ファンから非常に大きな評価を受け、その後ポップな音楽性を羽ばたかせ、チャートの上位に楽曲を送り込みながら幅広い音楽ファンの心をつかんでいった彼らは、非常に個性的な軌跡を歩んできた稀有の存在だといえるだろう。初代ヴォーカリストであり最高のカリスマ、ピーター・ガブリエル在籍期となる初期ジェネシス、ピーター・ガブリエル脱退後にフィル・コリンズがヴォーカルを兼任する形で活動をつづけた中期ジェネシス、そして70年代後半に3人態勢となり、よりポップスの要素を持ち込みながらチャートをにぎやかす世界的ロック・バンドとなった後期ジェネシス…、ラインナップの変更とともにその音楽性も変化させながら常に第一線を走り続けた彼らは、キャリアを通して15枚のスタジオ・アルバムや6枚のライヴ・アルバム、数多くのコンピレーション・アルバムなどをリリースし、実に1億枚以上の世界累計アルバム・セールスを記録、2010年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たす、まさにレジェンドの名にふさわしい存在だ。

3人体制となった前作でポップスの要素を色濃く打ち出した彼らが、それまでのプログレッシヴ・ロック・サウンドと80年代以降彼らが生み出してきた独自のポップス・サウンドを高次元で融合させた、1980年発表の通算10作目となる作品が、この『DUKE』だ。今作は、ジェネシス特有の"プログレッシヴ・ポップス"とも言えるスタイルを構築し、プログレッシヴ期からポップス期へと見事に転換していった作品であるだけでなく、彼らにとって初の全英アルバム・チャート1位をもたらし、その新たな方向性をより加速させていくこととなった、長いジェネシスの歴史の中でも重要な位置を占める名作だ。アルバム全体でまるで組曲のように確固たる一つの世界観を提示しつつも、各曲ごとに非常に高いクオリティを誇る今作は、当時の時代性とも調和しながら、80年代のジェネシス・サウンドを確率させる重要な作品となった。今作でもデヴィッド・ヘンツェルとジェネシスがプロデュースを担当しており、全英チャートで堂々1位を記録、全米チャートでも11位を記録。

If And Then There Were Three suggested that Genesis were moving toward pop, Duke is where they leaped into the fray. Not that it was exactly a head-first leap: the band may have peppered the album with pop songs, but there was still a heavy dose of prog, as the concluding "Duke" suite made clear. This is modernist art rock, quite dissimilar to the fragile, delicate Selling England by the Pound, and sometimes the precision of the attack can be a little bombastic. Nevertheless, this is a major leap forward in distinguishing the sound of Genesis, the band, and along with a new signature sound come pop songs, particularly in the guise of "Misunderstanding" and "Turn It on Again." The first is a light, nearly soulful, heartache song, the latter is a thunderous arena rocker, and both showcase the new version of Genesis at its absolute best.
