Recorded at Caribou Ranch, Nederland, Colorado. In many ways, Al DiMeola only started to carve a niche for himself once he left Return to Forever. Adapting influences as diverse as flamenco, Brazilian, Latin and electronica into his evolving jazz-rock repertoire has resulted in a large catalogue of rich, diverse albums. SCENARIO sees DiMeola and keyboard accomplice Jan Hammer creating shifting mosaics of interlocking sequencer/synth/guitar patterns. DiMeola lifts off into soaring flights of fancy atop Hammer's sharp-edged digital faux-scapes. The guitarist's idiosyncrasies are brought into particularly sharp relief here--his love of Brazilian flavors, especially, makes SCENARIO one of his finest overall efforts. It also doesn't hurt that he uses King Crimson's erstwhile rhythm section (bassist Tony Levin and drummer Bill Bruford) to anchor his six-string acrobatics on the engaging "Calliope."
