Masada: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Greg Cohen (bass); Joey Baron (drums). Recorded at Avatar, New York, New York on August 1, 1996. Composer: John Zorn. Personnel: Dave Douglas (trumpet); Joey Baron (drums). Recording information: 08/01/1996. Unknown Contributor Roles: Greg Cohen ; John Zorn; Joey Baron; Dave Douglas . The brainchild of John Zorn--composer, saxophonist, and high priest of radical experimentation--Masada melds klezmer, straight-ahead bop, film-noir soundtrack atmospheres, and Latin rhythms to create a unique musical hybrid. Though similar packaging design, oblique song titles, and the idiosyncratic numerical ordering makes Masada's albums are difficult to tell apart, EIGHT is a strong, inventive, and consistently rewarding standout. "Scechem" opens the album with a propulsive, extended free improv jam, giving way to the tender, beautiful, minor-key lament of "Elilah." This is followed by the sly, melancholic "Kodashim" (featuring a fine solo by bassist Cohen), the slinky groove of "Ne'eman," the nervous assault of "Amarim," and the heart-stoppingly gorgeous melodies of "Mochin." The whole album forms a cross-genre concoction that will appeal to jazz heads, klezmer fans, and enthusiasts of Zorn's other work. As always, drummer Joey Baron, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and Greg Cohen are in outstanding form. Their interplay with Zorn's spry, angular lines is dazzling, and HET, for its impeccable musicianship and superb compositions, is one of Masada's finest albums.
