While similar packaging design and oblique titling make the albums in Masada's discography difficult to tell apart, FOUR stands out because of its length. At less than 20 minutes, this excursion stands in stark contrast to Masada's other discs, most of which are exhaustingly long. The music here, however, is superb, and no Masada fan should be without the jazzed-up narrative of "Midbar," the melancholic, soulful strains of "Mahlanh," or the irresistibly groovy klezmer workout "Zenan."
As always, drummer Joey Baron, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and Greg Cohen are in outstanding form. Their interplay with saxophonist/composer Zorn's spry, angular lines is dazzling. While DALET is not, perhaps, the Masada disc to purchase first, it is still an extremely worthwhile addition to the group's outstanding discography.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
