Masada: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Greg Cohen (bass); Joey Baron (drums).
Recorded at RPM, New York, New York on February 20, 1994.
Super-experimentalist/saxophonist Zorn, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Greg Cohen, and drummer Joey Baron fuse traditional hard bop, noir-ish atmospherics, Ornette Coleman-style free improv, beautiful, ghostly melodies, and even Latin rhythmic elements--disguising the fusion in the clothes of klezmer. While Zorn composes all of Masada's music in one of two "Jewish scales" (a major scale with a second note flat or a minor scale with the fourth note sharp), "klezmer" is far too simple a term to categorize the music of this unique ensemble.
"Piram," the opening track on BEIT, and "Lachish" are adrenaline-charged, gear-shifting takes on the hard bop of the late '60s. The driving rhythms of "Peliyot" and "Ravayah" (complete with drum solo and eminently catchy theme) contrast such sensual, pulsing tracks as "Hadasha" and "Sansanah." The breadth and remarkable inventiveness of these musicians matches the stylistic range of Zorn's compositions. Douglas brings a rare lyricism, while the playing of Baron and Cohen is brilliantly imaginative, managing to sound both primal and utterly sophisticated. Zorn, of course, plays with his usual fluency and freneticism, and the interplay he prompts in the group is striking. BEIT is a fine, representative example of Masada's spectacular magic.
