ough Dutch singer/songwriter Fay Lovsky recorded numerous albums prior to forming this ensemble, FAY LOVSKY & LA BANDE DESSINEE is her first album with this delightful band. Part cabaret, part folk-rock, Lovsky's music is born out of the European tradition but throws healthy dollops of Americana thrown into the mix. The largely acoustic instrumentation includes guitars, string bass, percussion, marimba, glockenspiel, piano, mandolin, trumpet, and Other instruments. Lovsky even "plays" the theremin instead of just using it to make eerie noises.
Lovsky is an expressive singer, and her songs (all sung in English) are charming, romantic, and inventive. Each is perfectly arranged, suggesting an almost theatrical quality. The album's creative covers include a traditional Korean number (sung in Japanese) and three old American television commercial ditties ("Mr. Clean", "A Little Dab'll Do Ya", and the child-pedestrian safety lesson, "In The Middle In The Middle"). Both this self-titled album and its successor, NUMBERS, are winners.|
