On April 15th 1972, Barbra Streisand headlined a fundraiser for Senator George McGovern's presidential campaign. 18,000 people showed up at L.A.'s Forum to witness her first concert in six years. She did not disappoint. This album is 45 minutes of pure entertainment, a performance so enthralling that the audience would have stayed all night. She opens with "Sing," a lullaby from "Sesame Street" and her son's favorite song. She then goes into an upbeat, jolting "Make Your Own Kind Of Music." This is followed by a medley of "Starting Here, Starting Now" that was written by conductor David Schire, whose previous work with Barbra was the stage run of "Funny Girl."
A slow version of "Sweet Inspiration" crashes into Carole King's "Where You Lead," a soulful Motown-type number that included a four-piece backup choir. Giving her audience the choice between "Second Hand Rose" and "Stoney End," the audience chose the latter. The rock tune transfers very well to the live stage. Barbra caps off the evening with her theme song "People," dedicating it to the audience. Considering the paucity of Streisand performances over the years, it's a treat to have a live album from her, especially one as captivating as this.
