17世紀英国の大作曲家パーセルは、国教会の典礼音楽や王室の式典音楽をはじめ多彩な作品を残しました。(1)の聖チェチーリアは音楽の守護聖人。パーセルはこの聖人のための頌歌を4曲も書いていますが、これはその最も優れたものといわれている作品。ガーディナーの引き締まったディレクションによってパーセルの音楽の美を十全に引き出しています。(2)は、メアリー女王の誕生祝賀式と葬儀の折に演奏された音楽。ガーディナーの初期の録音で、ピリオド楽器のイングリッシュ・バロック・ソロイスツ結成前のモダン楽器での演奏。美しい和声で綴られた荘厳な世界を穏やかに聴かせてくれます。長岡鉄男氏推薦の優秀録音盤。
