JAZZ is one of the more satisfying Tony Bennett compilations currently available. In this context, "jazz" means no string sections attached, which also means that no familiar Bennett hits will be heard in a collection which spans the years 1954 -1967. Still, the working definition is wide enough to include anything from voice-piano duos to full-band arrangements with room for such bona-fide jazz artists as Stan Getz (featured on four tracks) and Al Cohn.
Bennett's outstanding vocals are the focus however, with special emphasis on the slower numbers. Both the gorgeous "On Green Dolphin Street" and Benny Carter's "When Lights Are Low" are sung deliberately, as if the extra attention will coax heretofore-hidden beauties from these gems. We are also treated to "I'm Through With Love" and "Street Of Dreams" from TONY SINGS FOR TWO, Bennett's lovely "cabaret" album with the inimitable Ralph Sharon.
