Full Title: Tony Bennett With Ralph Sharon And His Orchestra At Carnegie Hall: Recorded Live June 9, 1962.
Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); Ralph Sharon (conductor).
Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch
CARNEGIE HALL recreates the original 1962 performance by adding 18 unreleased songs to the existing 26-song double album.
This is part of Columbia Records' Tony Bennett Masters Series.
This is the Columbia reissue of the original 2-LP set documenting Bennett's triumphant 1962 Carnegie Hall concert, which was recorded on the heels of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco's" massive success. Bennett has this audience (which includes Frank Sinatra and Perry Como-- an "Italian singing school" as he comments from the stage) in the palm of his hand as he offers highly musical reprises of such hits as "Stranger In Paradise," "Because Of You," "Blue Velvet" and, of course, "San Francisco" itself.
Along the way he generously introduces two new songs, "It Amazes Me" and "Firefly," by the classy songwriting team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh. What impresses most however is that though Tony Bennett can be fairly classified as a classic show business "belter," he often opts for the softer, more nuanced interpretation of Broadway show-stoppers like "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and Kurt Weill's inspirational "Lost In The Stars."
