Edsel's 2015 two-fer of Kiki Dee's first two albums revives the 2008 remasters -- the bonus tracks from those EMI editions are here, just not necessarily paired with the same albums; so are Chris White's liner notes -- which means this is a handy way to get two of Dee's finest records. Loving & Free appeared on Elton John's Rocket Records and was co-produced by John, so unsurprisingly it shares some aesthetic and sonic sensibilities with his earliest records; heavy on pretty, hazy ballads with a slight country-rock flair but favoring gorgeous, sculpted pop. I've Got the Music in Me is considerably slicker, with producer Gus Dudgeon assisting Dee's transition to a disco-fied soft rock with a soulful undercurrent and the occasional flash of snazzy rock. Although the ragged edges of Loving & Free are somewhat missed, this is the moment where Kiki Dee's pop persona comes into sharp relief: this is where she finds her voice. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
