Recording information: 04/09/1961-??/??/1962. This 1998 CD contains two separate sessions by a pair of bands filled with New Orleans jazz veterans. Both ensembles tend to go out of tune, particularly the reed players, which has the net effect of making the music sound a bit amateurish. It is a pity, for this form of ensemble playing was full of spirit and would soon disappear altogether. Trombonist Albert Warner was the nominal leader of the first group, even though he did not believe in soloing and generally stuck to simple ensemble parts. His septet features both Kid Sheik Cola and Charles Love on trumpets, clarinetist Emile Barnes (on an off night), banjoist Ernest Roubeleau, bassist John Joseph, and drummer Albert Jiles. After their five titles, highlighted by an exuberant rendition of "Joe Avery's Place," a pickup group recorded at drummer Jiles' home jams on six numbers. The latter band has trumpeter Charles Love, Louis James doubling on clarinet and violin, tenor saxophonist Emanuel Paul, trombonist Eddie Summers, banjoist Emanuel Sayles, and Jiles; no piano or bass.
