Unlike the majority of Bert Jansch compilations, 1993's BLACKWATER SIDE draws from all aspects of the British folk guitarist's long and varied career. His many solo records, his long collaboration with John Renbourn, and his work with The Pentangle, the band formed by Jansch and Renbourn with Danny Thompson, Terry Cox, and Jacqui McShee, are all well represented.
The impressive 20-song BLACKWATER SIDE spans nearly three decades. Included are Jansch's trademark guitar instrumentals, vocal turns (among which are the definitive versions of both the traditional title track and Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"), such Jansch and Renbourn duets as "No Exit", and Pentangle tracks like the wonderful "Market Song". Any newcomer to Jansch's huge oeuvre would do well to start here.|
