Though known primarily for "Morning Dew," her oft-covered folk ramble about nuclear destruction, Canadian folkie Bonnie Dobson emerged at the very start of the 1960s folk revival, with contemporaries as luminous as Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Bob Dylan in his earliest phases. Dobson went on extended hiatus in the early '70s, only to re-emerge some 40-odd years later with 2014's unexpected album of all-new recordings Take Me for a Walk in the Morning Dew. She's Like a Swallow was Dobson's debut, originally released in 1960 on Prestige Records. The 14 selections here, all expertly recorded by industry legend Rudy Van Gelder, find Dobson's soaring voice and spare acoustic guitar accompaniment running through classics of public domain folk tunes and standards. Nothing here captures the eerie paranoia of her best-known tune, but her lovely voice is more than enjoyable on faithful renditions of dirges like "Frankie Slide" and a few traditional Canadian ballads like "The Jam at Gerry's Rock" or "Monsieur le Cure." ~ Fred Thomas|
