One of the major tenor saxophonists in jazz since his emergence in the mid-'40s, Teddy Edwards has not led enough sessions throughout his career considering his great talent. In the 1990s, he has been making up for some of the lost time by putting a great deal of planning into his releases. For this ambitious effort he is joined by five brass, five strings, a harp, a four-piece rhythm section, and on three songs the fine young singer Lisa Nobumoto. As if that were not enough, Edwards wrote ten of the 12 songs, arranged all of them, takes "Prelude" unaccompanied and plays a bit of clarinet on "Serenade in Blue." It's an impressive effort. ~ Scott Yanow
