Although its title would suggest a greatest hits package, ARETHA is actually an energetic 1986 album which produced several big hits, the most successful of which was "I Knew You Were Waiting," a duet with George Michael that soared to #1 on the Pop charts. Other highlights include a rocking Keith Richards-produced version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (which was the theme song to the Whoopie Goldberg movie of the same name) and "If You Need Love Tonight," another duet, this time with the great funk bassist Larry Graham.
Although the album is awash in producer Narada Michael Walden's trademark slick strings and synths, nothing can dilute the power of Aretha's voice, and Ms. Franklin seems to be genuinely enjoying herself here. Song selection-wise, the record misses a couple of times with syrupy, lightweight R&B tunes, but the Queen of Soul is mostly presented with material that she can, and does, sink her teeth into. Overall, ARETHA is Franklin's strongest and most fun effort of the '80s and proof positive that, two decades after her greatest successes, she was still one of the finest vocalists in any genre.
