Genesis's third album was a far cry from the delicate folk-rock tapestries and chiming 12-string guitars of its predecessor, TRESPASS. The infusion of a semi-classical structural sensibility had become more prevalent. Fragile ballads are at a minimum, replaced by driving classical-rock epics full of heavy guitar, bass lines, and sweeping Mellotron. The sound occasionally recalls the refined but uncompromising instrumental attack of the Nice (particularly in Tony Banks's Keith Emerson-ish blasts of organ bravura). The interlocking guitar arpeggios and folkie moments central to TRESPASS are still present, however, providing contrast to NURSERY CRYME's bolder moments. The group's ambitious compositional style and Gabriel's eccentric lyrics are at their height on "The Fountain of Salamacis," "The Musical Box," and the instrumentally sophisticated "The Return of the Giant Hogweed," making NURSERY CRYME the first Genesis album to truly define their mature style.

1967年に英国で産声を上げ、70年代には叙情的でありながらシアトリカルなプログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドとして非常に高い人気を誇り、その後80年代にはポップスの要素を大きく打ち出しながら世界的な人気を誇るバンドとして音楽シーンの頂点へと昇り詰めていった、英国ロック・バンドの代表格であり、五大プログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドの一つとしても賞賛を受ける存在、それがこのジェネシスだ。

英国プログレッシヴ・ロック黄金期の一翼を担うバンドとしてプログ・ロック・ファンから非常に大きな評価を受け、その後ポップな音楽性を羽ばたかせ、チャートの上位に楽曲を送り込みながら幅広い音楽ファンの心をつかんでいった彼らは、非常に個性的な軌跡を歩んできた稀有の存在だといえるだろう。初代ヴォーカリストであり最高のカリスマ、ピーター・ガブリエル在籍期となる初期ジェネシス、ピーター・ガブリエル脱退後にフィル・コリンズがヴォーカルを兼任する形で活動をつづけた中期ジェネシス、そして70年代後半に3人態勢となり、よりポップスの要素を持ち込みながらチャートをにぎやかす世界的ロック・バンドとなった後期ジェネシス…、ラインナップの変更とともにその音楽性も変化させながら常に第一線を走り続けた彼らは、キャリアを通して15枚のスタジオ・アルバムや6枚のライヴ・アルバム、数多くのコンピレーション・アルバムなどをリリースし、実に1億枚以上の世界累計アルバム・セールスを記録、2010年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たす、まさにレジェンドの名にふさわしい存在だ。

前作『TRESPASS』発表後にアンソニー・フィリップスとジョン・メイヒューが脱退、新たにスティーヴ・ハケットとフィル・コリンズを迎え入れ、初期黄金期のラインナップで1971年に発表したサード・アルバムが、この『NURSERY CRYME』だ。よりシアトリカルになった歌詞やシャープなサウンド、そして起伏にとんだ壮大な世界観を聴かせてくれる今作は、ファンからも初期ジェネシスの傑作として高い評価を受けている名作だ。前作同様ジョン・アンソニーがプロデュースした今作は、全英チャート39位を記録。

If Genesis truly established themselves as progressive rockers on Trespass, Nursery Cryme is where their signature persona was unveiled: true English eccentrics, one part Lewis Carroll and one part Syd Barrett, creating a fanciful world that emphasized the band's instrumental prowess as much as Peter Gabriel's theatricality. Which isn't to say that all of Nursery Cryme works. There are times when the whimsy is overwhelming, just as there are periods when there's too much instrumental indulgence, yet there's a charm to this indulgence, since the group is letting itself run wild. Even if they've yet to find the furthest reaches of their imagination, part of the charm is hearing them test out its limits, something that does result in genuine masterpieces, as on "The Musical Box" and "The Return of the Giant Hogweed," two epics that dominate the first side of the album and give it its foundation. If the second side isn't quite as compelling or quite as structured, it doesn't quite matter because these are the songs that showed what Genesis could do, and they still stand as pinnacles of what the band could achieve. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
