MTVによるR.E.M.の全記録が6枚組DVD作品に!
"世界で最も重要なロックンロール・バンド"となるR.E.M.がファースト・シングルをリリースしたのは、今をさかのぼること30年以上前。1981年の7月のことだった。これは、MTVが開局してから初めてのミュージック・ビデオをオンエアする数週間前のことだった。ほぼ同時期に産声をあげたMTVとR.E.M.。そしてその時からMTVは、R.E.M.のありとあらゆる映像を撮影し、彼らの軌跡を追いかけていくことになる。
本映像作品『REMTV』に収められているのは、デビュー間もない時から解散まで、MTVが撮りためたR.E.M.の全記録である。DISC1には、1991年と2001年の「MTV UNPLUGGED」でのパフォーマンス。こちらには、今年初めに音源がリリースされた『UNPLUGGED: THE COMPLETE 1991 AND 2001 SESSIONS』に初収録されたアウトテイク(「Get Up」、「The One I Love」、「World Leader Pretend」)の映像も収録されている。
特筆すべきことは、この作品は、MTVだけでなく、MTVが所属するバイアコム・ネットワーク全部にあるR.E.M.の映像を集めたところである。つまり、このDVD作品に収録されているのは、MTVだけでなく、VH1、コメディ・セントラル、ニコロデオンなどからも幅広く集められた映像である。
Disc2には、VH1の「Storytellers」の映像に未放映部分の「New Test Leper」や「(Don't Go Back To)Rockville」などが収録されている。その他、R.E.M.がMTVで行ってきたライヴの数々、そして2007年にロックンロールの殿堂に出席した時の様子も含まれている。さらに、長年のR.E.M.であれば、狂喜乱舞するに違いない、1993年のMTV「Livewire」でのパフォーマンス(「So Central Rain」、「Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)」など)、さらに1984年「The Cutting Edge」でのパフォーマンス(「Driver 8」にブラウンズヴィル・ステーションのカヴァー「Smokin In The Boy's Room」など)も収められている。
