Part of Alain Danielou's grand vision (though not part of the Anthology of World Music series), this album performs well at preserving some of the musical traditions of Cambodia with recordings circa 1968. The pinpeat string ensemble is represented with a number of tracks by Chhuon and his Siemreap-Angkor shadow theater ensemble. Similarly the sadev master Srey Yim and his ensemble are represented for a number of tracks. Finally, there are a few solo works by Tuk-Mon, a master of the chapey (a lute). The music holds similarities to Thai and Laotian music, and is a generally interesting sound. The sheer foreignness of the timbres and the intentionally scratchy tones of the strings may prove a bit much for some casual listeners, though there is a good deal of music worth hearing nonetheless. Tread with caution, but listen if interested in nearby traditions. ~ Adam Greenberg|
