After busting out while his band was on break with his debut solo album Terror Amor earlier in 2014, Davila 666 frontman AJ Davila returned quickly with his second effort. Released a mere nine months later, Beibi is a much noisier and nastier album. It's no surprise it came out on Burger instead of Nacional, as it has much more of the quick, lo-fi production values the former cherishes. It also doesn't have the same collaborative, all-hands-on-deck approach of his debut. Whatever Davila may have sacrificed in sound quality or big-name guests, he certainly didn't skimp on hooks or riffs. Beibi is bursting open at the seams with both, and just about every track sounds like a million-selling single. Try not singing along with the chorus to "Borderline," banging your head like a fool to the power-chord heavy "Yo Quiero Infierno," or shaking your hips to the swinging "Casi," it's not easy. Of course not every swing can result in a home run, there are a few triples mixed in like the down and bluesy "Oh My God Prueba" and the pretty folk-rock ballad "Tan Bien Sucio." These slightly less frantic songs serve as nice breathers between the high-energy rockers, finger-shredding workouts like "Todo Lo Que Quiero," and glammy outer space jams ("Media Naranja"). Though it sounds like it was bashed out in an afternoon and preserved on a cruddy truck stop cassette, Beibi is more rock-solid proof that Davila is among the best of his generation of garage rockers. Mixing noise, power, and melody like he does isn't easy, and that he can crank out two albums in one year that do it so well is impressive bordering on magical. ~ Tim Sendra
