Most of the time, live albums are interim projects produced to essentially mark time between a musician's/band's next release proper. These releases are usually a coy move designed to bleed more hard-earned dollars from consumers' deepening pockets. TIME LAPSE is a stopgap to be sure, but it's a dandy.
TIME LAPSE is Hackett's one and only official live document. What sets it apart from most run-of-the-mill live sets are the song roster and top-notch performances. On tracks such as "Depth Charge", Hackett's resplendent chords sit atop a limber mid-tempo rhythm section and melancholic keyboards. TIME LAPSE uses liberal portions of SPECTRAL MORNINGS and HIGHLY STRUNG, along with a rousing "Ace of Wands", a climb up "The Steppes"' stunning sound-cliffs, the gentle, sweeping refrains of "Jacuzzi", and a rendition of Genesis' "In That Quiet Earth"--minus, unfortunately, the grand closing section but with nifty soloing. A refreshing and energetic document.|
