Cluster member and Krautrock figurehead Hans-Joachim Roedelius constantly documented his celestial synth and organ works over the years. As they came to him, he recorded audio sketches that often grew into more fully realized pieces on his many solo albums. In the mid- to late '70s, Roedelius worked in a private studio with a minimal setup of various synthesizers and echo effects. When not working on material for Cluster, Harmonia, or any of his other collaborations, he would often record his experiments and raw ideas, hoping to flesh them out later. Tape Archive 1973-1978 collects 50 such sketches, ranging from beautifully lilting melodies to simple experiments in rhythm or sound. The warts-and-all collection offers an incredibly intimate look into Roedelius' private creative mind, showcasing the earliest stages of brilliance that the public rarely gets to see before they boil down. ~ Fred Thomas
