■Neil Diamond: 1941年1月24日生まれ、ブルックリン出身のシンガー・ソングライター。1960年代に音楽キャリアは始まり、現在まで1億2,500万枚以上のレコード売り上げを誇り、史上最高の売り上げを記録する1人として知られている。全米チャートにおいてもBarbra Streisand 、Elton Johnに次いで3番目に成功しているアーティストであり、1984年にはソングライターの殿堂入り、2011年にはロックンロールの殿堂入りを含む偉大な賞を数多く手に入れた「生きる伝説」と言えるアーティストでもある。
■本作: オリジナル作品としては2008年の”Home Before Dark”以来 6年振りにリリースされる通算32作目のスタジオ・アルバム。40年在籍したColumbiaからCapitol Recordsに移籍後初めてのリリースされる作品。レコーディングはロサンゼルスを中心に行われた。

4年ぶりのスタジオ盤は、ドン・ウォズとジャックナイフ・リーをプロデューサーに迎えているのが驚きだ。ところが、まるで気負いのない泰然とした音作りには、大ヴェテランの貫禄と自信が漂っている。重みのある渋い歌声も良いが、何より曲が良く、ブリル・ビルディングでの下積み時代から培ったアメリカン・ポップスの王道を行く作曲センスに敬服する以外ない。〈Melody Road〉とは彼の人生そのものだろう。
