Intrada launches its limited-edition Special Collection series with Basil Poledouris' underrated Switchback, which proves yet again the composer's mastery of the action genre. Based on a deceptively simple three-note motif, the music builds with expert precision, with each cue more suspenseful and dramatic than the last -- particularly striking are the locomotive sequences that lend the film its title, offering Poledouris the opportunity to create cues as breakneck and propulsive as any in his distinguished portfolio. Intrada deserves acclaim as well -- the packaging and liner notes are excellent, inaugurating what will emerge as one of the premier soundtrack reissue campaigns of the period. ~ Jason Ankeny

連続殺人犯に、息子を拐われてしまったFBI捜査官の追跡。炎の復讐劇的プロットながら、熱くなりすぎないこの作品の音楽は、ベイジル・ポルドゥリス。となると、やはりヒートアップするのか、と思いきや、飛翔させ尽くさないメロディであったり、テンポの良さと迫力は持っていくが、執拗に盛り上がらないところが面白い。ポルドゥリスにおいて、この、冷静を勤める感は面白い。 (C)馬場敏裕
