With their sullen demeanours and incongruously melodic songs, they provided welcome respite from the vacuous '80s music scene. These radio sessions cover their glory years, from the desperate howl of "In A Hole" to the pristine pop of "Far Gone And Out." There's even a reverent cover of the Temptations "My Girl." The compilation serves as a candid document of one of the key British groups of the era. The dark spectre of the Velvet Underground was never far behind Jim and William Reid, but the Chain always chose bubblegum melody over sonic mayhem, keeping their tunes as sharp as their winkle-picker boots. In 1985, at the height of their notoriety, they recorded their most revealing Peel session. Confounding expectations, they played four acoustic tracks dripping with reverb cool. It proved that their songs had an underlying beauty not always apparent below the usual layers of screeching feedback.
