This British guitar-pop band's brilliant final album was completed shortly before drummer and founding member Matthew Fletcher took his life in the summer of 1996. It features songs about hateful girls and annoying boys, endearingly told from the point of view of a confusion-riddled adolescent. That confusion turns into bitterness with adulthood; some grown-up cynicism can be heard in the ironic lilt of singer Amelia Fletcher's (Matthew's sister) voice. But the brilliance of Heavenly is how its songs discuss adult conundrums with the youthful excitement of slumber-party gossip. Heavenly's songs are uplifting because they make you laugh about things you might normally cry about.
Heavenly's music accentuates this teen-aged appeal by artfully combining a '60s bubblegum-pop mentality with grrrl-punk brattiness, leaving garage stains on fluffy, fey melodies. Echoes of Blondie and Abba can be heard on "Mark Angel" and on a lively cover of French singer Serge Gainsbourg's "Nous Ne Sommes Pas Des Anges." The album, and, apparently, Heavenly's career closes on a riotous note, with the godfather of twee, Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, adding his comic baritone to "Pet Monkey."
