The very title of Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx: Live in Los Angeles suggests a revue, and it's true this double-disc 2014 live set does sizzle with a bit of theatrical glitz, but it's also true that if DeYoung didn't add the "Styx" to his title, some listeners may not be aware of the contents within. What's here is what's claimed: 17 songs, every one of them a Styx song with the exception of "Desert Moon," the 1984 hit that suggested DeYoung might've also conquered charts on his own. Apart from "Renegade," which is heavily identified with Tommy Shaw, these are all very much DeYoung's tunes and he delivers them with a showman's flair that almost compensates for his supporting band's clean precision. Ultimately, the whole shindig isn't much more than an amiable trip down memory lane for the hardcore fans, suggesting that what amounts to a good night out doesn't necessarily make for a nice night in. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
