VINYL MASTERPIECEレーベルの人気オムニバス・シリーズといえば『MASTERPIECE』『NIGHTTIME LOVERS』ですが、VINYL MASTERPIECEの傘下レーベルPTGレーベルの看板シリーズといえばこの『DISCO GIANTS』です。このシリーズはサブタイトルに"20 Full Length disco classics of the 80's"とあるように収録曲すべてフル・バージョン(ロング・バージョンもしくは現存する一番収録時間の長いバージョン)を採用しているので、仕様にこだわるディスコ・リスナーから絶大な信頼を得ています。

The sound quality is sometimes lacking -- a recurring issue throughout the PTG label catalog -- but the 11th volume of Disco Giants is a great round-up of '80s R&B that contains a nice balance of basics and equally appealing, slightly deeper cuts. While not everything here was a smash hit, this is one of the most consistent volumes in the series, low on mere curiosities. Rene & Angela's "I'll Be Good," Teena Marie's "Lovergirl," Atlantic Starr's "Circles," and the S.O.S. Band's "Just the Way You Like It" are among the must-own selections. Just beneath them is Captain Rapp's "Bad Times (I Can't Stand It)," an early Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis gem that preceded "Just the Way You Like It," and Patrice Rushen's "Feel So Real (Won't Let Go)." ~ Andy Kellman
