Similar to the lists from British magazines (Top 50 Singles/Albums/Bands of All Time) which unaccountably feature dozens of contemporary artists, Dave Pearce's 40 Classic Dance Anthems includes about two dozen 1999 copyrights. The two discs really should've been available separately; the first is a look at the year's top commercial tracks, all smoothed-out trance pop from likely sources (ATB, Chicane, System F, Matt Darey, Agnelli & Nelson). The second, though, plays like a greatest-dance-of-all-time compilation, stringing together 21 mostly American (and mostly amazing) techno/house/garage classics from a 15-year span: "Strings of Life" by Derrick May, "You Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Helden, "Straight From the Heart" by Doolally, "Good Life (Buena Vida)" by Inner City, "(You Got Me) Burning Up" by Cevin Fisher and Loleatta Holloway, and "To Be in Love" by Masters at Work. Perhaps there are a bare few interested in both discs, but for the rest of humanity 40 Classic Dance Anthems just isn't worth it. ~ John Bush
