Although most keyboard-dependant jazz ends up sounding cheap and generic, Leo Gandelman has a certain flavor that prevents that from happening. This collection of his work covers mostly the '80s and early '90s, which does contribute to the dated style he performs in. But the intense horn playing here salvages most of the songs, keeping them from becoming smooth jazz elevator music. This sound is obviously not for everyone, but any listeners looking for some excellent horn playing on a so-so jazz album could do a lot worse than start with Gandelman. ~ Bradley Torreano
