Commemorative double-CD compilation of the 25-year career of Ney Matogrosso, an important singer who has a distinctive androgynous style evidenced in his counter-tenor voice and in his daring outfits. The exotic opening work with Secos e Molhados in 1974 is remembered through "Vira," "Sangue Latino," and "Rosa de Hiroshima." "America do Sul" and the Caribbean "Coubanakan" are from the first solo album Homem de Neanderthal. "Uai, Uai" (Roberto de Carvalho/Rita Lee) brings the special appearance of the former Queen of Rock (Lee) in a humorous redneck rendition. The sad "Balada do Louco" (Arnaldo Baptista/Lee) introduces a denser atmosphere that leads to disk two, which features mature triumphs. In the '80s, Matogrosso tuned himself to the classics of Brazilian music, recording Tom Jobim ("Retrato em Branco em Preto," also recorded here), Villa Lobos, and Chico Buarque, along with old sambistas like Almirante, and also was backed by serious musicians like Rafael Rabello. The Latin "Vereda Tropical" gives room to the humorous "Homem Com H," which plays with his sexual ambiguity. "Tanto Amar" (Chico Buarque) brings romantic lyrics to Caribbean-scented harmonies/melody. Brazilian rock is remembered through "O Beco" (Herbert Vianna/Bi Ribeiro) and "Pro Dia Nascer Feliz" (Frejat/Cazuza). Gilberto Gil is represented by the happy "Andar Com Fe." "El Manisero" (Simon Rodriguez) is modernized with the support of Aquarela Carioca, and the lachrymose "Yolanda" is performed with Latin percussion. The compilation provides a faithful portrait of the many phases of this versatile singer's career, representing a choice introduction for his works. ~ Alvaro Neder
