Although this 1969 album's rustic title is seemingly incongruous with the idea of vibes-driven jazz, Gary Burton does an impressive job of connecting the two concepts, resulting in a beautifully easy-going record. Boasting a top-notch backing group that generally allows Burton's resonant vibraphone playing to remain at the fore, COUNTRY ROADS settles into a delicate-yet-adventurous sound that subtly pushes the boundaries of jazz, as evidenced on the charmingly laid-back title track and the wonderfully fleet-footed, bluegrass-influenced "Wichita Breakdown."
