Gary Burton's DUSTER, released in 1967, was an early foray into jazz fusion, predating even Miles Davis's FILLES DE KILIMANJARO and IN A SILENT WAY. Burton's multi-mallet vibes attack is as sharp as ever, but it's the presence of rock-influenced guitarist Larry Coryell that gives the disc its distinctive flavor. Bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Roy Hayes flesh out the ensemble work perfectly, contributing to the modal interplay. Post bop still figures heavily into the aesthetic, but there is an undeniable glimmer of something futuristic here, a glimmer that would come to full fruition in the late-'60s and throughout the '70s.
